September 25-26   Rotterdam (Netherlands) Ahoy
The basis of the present Ahoy’ was laid in 1950. After the devastation caused by the Second World War, the city of Rotterdam had worked flat out on the reconstruction and the port was virtually complete. To mark the occasion, the Rotterdam Ahoy! exhibition was held in a purpose-built hall on the site where the medical faculty of the Erasmus University now stands. Ahoy’ Rotterdam as we now know it was built in 1970. The complex’s striking design won various national and international awards for its special steel structures. The first event to be held there was the Femina family exhibition. Since then, Ahoy’ has been expanded on a number of occasions, and was renovated and refurbished in 1998 to create today’s multifunctional venue.

It is, however, timelessly beautiful and has become an integral part of the modern cityscape. The Olympiaberg (Olympic Hill) is a grassy mound made from Second World War rubble and also provides great views. The ice rink and swimming pool are also popular with sports fans, as too is the Olympic Stadium, home to FC Bayern Munich, one of Europe's top football clubs.

November 10   Upper Darby (USA) Tower Theatre
Theatre has long been a draw for city and suburban concertgoers alike. Originally a 1920s movie house (a live band would accompany the silent films shown on the big screen), the Tower has evolved into one of the more civilized places in and around the city to see live music. Ushers show you to your assigned seat (either in the downstairs orchestra section or upstairs in the balcony), concerts start on time and any unruliness is quickly quelled by security. The Clear Channel-booked acts tend to be either those just on the cusp of stardom, or those whose audience would appreciate a slightly more sedate venue -- which means acts as diverse as Jason Mraz, the Isley Brothers, Elvis Costello and Belle & Sebastian have all graced the Tower's stage.

The building was center of a Civil Rights crisis when use of the hall was denied to African American singer Marion Anderson in 1939.
